Neurosurgerical Study on Korean Wounded Vietnam Conflict



Abstract
The authors have analyzed 1, 000 cases of Korean wounded veterans who have evacuated from Vietnam war field, chiefly on view of neurosurgical aspects, collected for last 7 years and 2 months;
1. There divided into 349 cases of head injuries, 357 cases of peripheral nerve injuries, 148 cases of vertebral and spinal cord injuries, and 146 cases of H. N. P. and others in the total 1, 000 cases of the injured veterans.
2. In 349 cases of head injuries, 180 patients or 51.6% were injured from fragment of shell, explosives, grenade and booby trap.
3. On the site of head injury, the frontal injury was most frequent in rate of 38. 7o and next temporal and parietal in that order. Craniectomy was carried out on 207 cases (56.4%) of head injuries and cranioplasty on 173 cases.
4. 48.9% of total head injuries were resulted into sequelae such as hemiplegia (13.8%) cranial nerue palsy, speech disturbance and epilepsy in that order.
5. In the larger proportions of the causes of the peripheral nerve injuries fragment injury occupied 67.5% and bullet 25.5% and total cases divi-into 8.4% bra chial injury, 18.2% ulnar injury, 15.1% median, 14.6%radial, 21.0% sciatic, 10.1 peroneal and 8.7% tibial nerve injury.
6. On the other hand, 45.9% or zumbar and 41.9%of thoracic injury were demonstrated and paraplegia in 24.3% of cord injury.
7. In 148 cases of vertebral and spinal cord injury 45.3% of cases were resulted from fragment injury, which was similar to cases of the bullet injury in rate of 46% in Korean conflict.
